Xª Festival ‘Cumbre Flamenca’ * June 7, 2019 * Broad Stage, Santa Monica / Thank You So. California!

10th Festival ‘CUMBRE FLAMENCA’

Featuring Award-winning dancers Adrián Santana, Águeda Saavedra, and guitarist Francisco Vinuesa

Friday, June 7 at 8:00pm
The Broad Stage, 1310 11th St, Santa Monica, CA 90401

“A Visual Feast!’ ‘…Full of Heart and Soul!”

Coming to The Broad Stage in Santa Monica for one show only is the highly anticipated tenth anniversary celebration of CUMBRE FLAMENCA. Debuting two of Spain’s rising stars, this performance gives tribute to soaring, gutsy, visceral flamenco dance.

Adrián Santana was born in the Málaga region of Andalucía to a family of artists, singers, and dancers. He was trained at an early age in both Flamenco and Spanish Classical Dance, He was awarded first prize in choreography at the “Málaga Crea” competition and 2nd place winner at the XIX Certamen de Coreografía de Danza Española y Flamenco in Madrid.  He has worked as a featured dancer with some of Spain’s most prestigious artists including José Porcel, Rocío Molina, Antonio Canales, Aída Gómez, María Pagés, Lola Greco, Javier Latorre, Belén Maya, Pastora Galván, Nani Paños, Concha Jareño, Rafael Estévez, Marco Flores, Manuel Liñán, Daniel Doña and director Carlos Saura. Santana commands the stage with power and precision. His impassioned performances have an eloquent tone and skillfully shifting rhythmic formations.

Águeda Saavedra also from Málaga won First Prize in the “Ribarroja del Turia” contest two years consecutively, going on to win a scholarship in the Antonio Najarro dance company where she was awarded best performer. Saavedra is all staccato rhythms and rotating twists. Building slowly with mesmerizing concentration, her eloquent silhouettes and low arched back positions, sinuous arms and curled fingertips stir flashes of seething fierceness.

Francisco Vinuesa has shared the stage with artists such as Manuel Linan, Jose Merce, Arcangel, Antonia Contreras, Cancanilla, Amparo Heredia ‘La Repompa’, Raquel Heredia, Sergio Aranda, Miguel Infante, Luisa Chicano, David Martin, Kiko Ventura, Chaparro Malaga, and Antonio Soto among others. He is noted for his forceful clarity mixed with passion and precision. Francisco elicits a spectrum of tonalities from his guitar, which bring space and silence into the equation.

Santana and Saavedra are a cumulative driving force of complex flamenco rhythms that are honed into a filigreed quiver. Pure passion of the highest order, each presents qualities that transform their performances into choreographic works of art.

UNESCO has declared Flamenco to be a World Heritage treasure. Experience this unique, cultural tradition of Spain in the heart of Santa Monica!

Additional dancers include Manuel Gutiérrez, Lakshmi Basile “La Chimi,” Daniela Zermeño Sanchez along with Zermeño Academy dancers; plus, singers Francisco Orozco “El Yiyi”, José Cortés Fernández; guitarist José Manuel Alconchel Ortega; and percussionist Diego Álvarez “El Negro”.

Delight the senses with an authentic Pre-show Spanish Paella & Tapas Reception from Chef Roger Navas-Balladares’ Savory Roads Catering. Beverages, Sangria and Sherry from Spain available for purchase.
