ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Carrying the torch for traditional flamenco, del Mar Moreno sees the art as a living culture. Her performances are the very incarnation of this philosophy, bringing the art into the 21st century as she challenges existing taboos and mores from within. Her deep understanding of flamenco song as a vessel for transmitting cultural memory, lends a gravitas to her dance which is in constant dialogue with the singer.

Guest artist, Diego Agujetas, is in town for the launch of his new CD with Pepe del Morao the following night, Saturday October 26, at La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley. These artists represent two of the most important flamenco families of Jerez de la Frontera. Diego, like his brother, the legendary Manuel Agujetas, is a revered elder known for his ability to evoke the duende of the ancient Gitano cantes. Pepe, one of the brightest stars of his generation, follows in the footsteps of his grandfather Manuel Morao, his uncle Moraíto and his cousin Diego del Morao, guitar-playing innovators who have defined the unique sound and rhythm of Jerez flamenco.
