Superstars María Juncal and Iván Vargas Heredia return to Los Angeles for their first collaboration and two rare evenings of exhilarating flamenco.

Native to the Canary Islands, María Juncal was born into a family of flamenco blood, the Borruls. She began her path studying ballet and Spanish classic dance in Tenerife, where she was a pupil of Miguel Navarro, Rosalina Ripoll and her aunt, Trini Borrul. In Madrid, she studied with legendary flamenco stars as La Tati, Güito, Merche Esmeralda and Ciro, and classic dance with Dagmara Brown.

María has worked with the companies of Manolete, José Greco, Güito and “Flamenco bells”, doing tours in France, Spain, German, United Kingdom, Canada, The United States, Japan and China. She excelled as a soloist in the show “Pure Passion”, produced for Joaquín Cortés, and in “The Gypsy Muse” by Paco Peña. In Los Angeles, María has collaborated with Debbie Allen, dancer and actress of the series ‘Fame’ in her documentaries on dance.

Ivan Vargas Heredia is a bailaor—a dancer of flamenco puro, the traditional style of Andalusia. He was born in one of the legendary caves of the Sacromonte in Granada to a Gitano Roma family steeped in flamenco. Ivan’s uncles Mario Maya, Juan Andres Maya and Manolete are legends of flamenco. At the tender age of 8 he premiered in Madrid, discovered by the world-famous dancer Cristobal Reyes where he performed at the prestigious tablao Zambra. From there his career rapidly expanded, his talent was recognized at the Festival de Cante de las Minas de la Union 2005, where he was a finalist in the dance competition “El Desplante Minero”. He has performed alongside heavy weights of flamenco including Eva la Yerbabuena, Farruquito, Juana Amaya and flamenco singers Enrique Morente and Jose Merce.

Ivan continues to perform in renowned flamenco venues such as Casa Patas, Corral de la Moreria, Cafe de Chinitas and world-famous Festivals such as the Bienal de Sevilla, and the Festival de Jerez.

Noted Flamenco singer Jonathan Reyes Jiménez brings the passion of flamenco and the tradition of the cante jondo or deep song style to his riveting performances. He has been called “simply sensational” with shows that display the styles as only gypsy performers can render them.

The contributions of dancers Manuel Gutiérrez, Daniela Zermeño Sanchez as well as musicians José Cortés, José Tanaka, Diego Alvarez and Alex Jordan are an indispensable part of this exceptional program.

It is said that there are four elements of flamenco: Cante, voice; Baile, dance; Toque, guitar, and; Jaleo – audience participation. All will be in full force at the 9th Festival CUMBRE FLAMENCA celebration at the Colony Theatre in the heart of Burbank.
