ABOUT OUR VISITING ARTIST
María Juncal

After 4 years, world-renown Flamenco dancer María Juncal returns to Southern California for an exciting 2-day workshop: Feb. 5 – 6 in the City of Orange and North Hollywood; plus Feb. 8 – 12 in Santa Barbara. Due to limited time, we are offering one workshop day in Orange County, and one day in North Hollywood. If you are interested in either location please email me directly. More details to come! Limited space. Join us and study with one of Spain’s top dancer, teacher and choreographer from ‘Amor de Dios’ in Madrid! Stay tuned for more information.

María was born in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, where she started her Ballet and Spanish Classical Dance studies with her relative Trini Borrull, choreographer and first dancer of the Liceu of Barcelona. She moved to Tenerife and collaborated with the Cuban Ballet.

In Madrid she continues her studies with the flamenco masters El Güito, Cristóbal Reyes, Merche Esmeralda and La Tati.

She was part of El Güito Dance Company and toured Spain and France with it, as with Manolete Dance Company. She performed solo in the U.S.A., at the National Theatre, in New York, as well as in many other major cities, such as Boston, Chicago, Kansas or Minnesota, among others.

Back in Spain, she takes part in the show “Campanas Flamencas” with Milagros Menjíbar and La Tati.

María presented her first show “La Gitana Blanca” in Germany at the time when she began performing as a soloist in the José Greco’s company which debuted in the U.S.A. She participated as actress and dancer in documentaries with the actress/dancer/choreographer Debbie Allen in Los Angeles, and has performed as well as a soloist in Joaquín Cortés show “Pura Pasión”, presented in London, Madrid, Barcelona and Japan.

María was the premier soloist in “Musa Gitana” directed by Paco Peña, presented all around Europe and China, and director assistant and soloist in “España Baila” by Cristóbal Reyes.

She presented her second show “Azabache y Miel” in the Teatro de la Danza in Mexico. With this show she performed on many stages and tablaos in Madrid and was invited to the annual festival La Silla de Oro, organized by Madrid’s regional government.

As teacher, she has taught in Master classes in Mexico, Los Angeles, Germany and Madrid. Presently, she is teaching at the renowned flamenco studio “Amor de Dios” in Madrid where she also co-hosts the annual Veranos Flamencos month-long multi-class Master class series with Alfonso Losa and multiple visiting artists.

She has collaborated already three times with the famous irish dance company River Dance, and recently she has received the Flamenco Dance Antonio Gades National Award in Córdoba. This award pushed her career forward and is considered nowadays as one of the main figures in Spanish dance.
