‘JALEOS’: Stories, musings, tall tales, and sketches from the world of flamenco.

A feature-length documentary—crafted from archival footage, audio testimonies, and contemporary recordings—that explores how the history of flamenco is intimately linked to modernity and the advent of machines. Blending storytelling with the essay form, the film takes viewers on a journey through surprising and little-known episodes: from Edison’s first film featuring the dancer Carmencita to the fascination with flamenco shown by the Nazis and the artistic avant-garde. Spanning the 20th and 21st centuries and traversing the globe, the film connects flamenco with politics, art, and history, guided by a chorus of diverse voices that includes contemporary artists and key figures in the flamenco world.

Using archive material and employing a fragmented, polyphonic structure, the film presents a history of flamenco that links it to modernity, popular culture and politics. Through unexpected narratives and associations, and featuring figures from various eras and contexts, the film explores an impure flamenco that is in constant dialogue with the world, where tradition, mass culture, and the contemporary imagination coexist.

Isaki Lacuesta—a two-time Golden Shell winner—presents JALEOS: a journey through everything flamenco conceals, from the era of silent film to the avant-garde, and from the rise of Nazism to the Spanish Civil War.

Featuring C. Tangana, Alba Flores, Rocío Molina, and Soleá Morente.

In theaters November 13. Later, it will be available on the free platform CaixaForum+.
