In Landscape + Silencios, Spanish duo Rafael Estévez and Valeriano Paños explore flamenco’s dialogue with the avant-garde, honoring Carmen Amaya and Vicente Escudero.
Landscape, performed by Rafael Estévez and Yoel Vargas, draws on the zapateado of Carmen Amaya and the experimental percussion of John Cage, imagining a meeting of their worlds in 1940s New York.
Silencios, performed by Estévez and Paños, is inspired by Vicente Escudero and a text from Cage’s A Year from Monday, reflecting on silence, chance, and attentive listening through stillness, movement, and the dialogue between the two performers.
Following the performance, Estévez and Paños will join the audience for a conversation in Spanish on the influence of Carmen Amaya and Vicente Escudero on flamenco and the lasting impact of their time in New York on the evolution of the art form.
