Professor and writer Juan Manuel Suárez Japón presents his recently published book, “Manolo Sanlúcar, the Eternal Mark of a Genius,” on “Nuestro Flamenco” on Radio Clásica, the Spanish National Radio Station. This is an essential text for better understanding the artistic and human dimension of a composer and guitarist who left a fundamental body of work for the history of flamenco and the music of our country.
Manolo Sanlúcar born in Sanlúcar de Barrameda was a renowned Spanish flamenco composer and guitarist, considered one of the most important figures in the history of flamenco. A virtuoso from a young age, he was influenced by masters like Nino Ricardo and Diego el del Gastor, and was a pivotal figure in evolving the flamenco guitar, incorporating it into symphonic music through works like Fantasía para guitarra y orquesta. His first album was recorded with Pepe El Pinto and later he went on to accompany La Paquera de Jerez. Additionally, many young guitarists have passed through his hands that are now great professionals in their own right, including Vicente Amigo, Rafael Riqueni, José Antonio Rodríguez, El Niño de Pura and Juan Carlos Romero.
However, Manolo Sanlúcar´s great masterpiece is Tauromagia, an album which transmits the narrative of the national festival – bullfighting – being able to provoke true melodic images relating to the bull. Many experts, such as José Manuel Gamboa point out that this is one of the best records of flamenco guitar music in history.
