‘The Cathedral of Cante’ * Cante de las Minas

Only those who have seen flamenco in La Union know what true duende is. Every August, the mining town becomes the world capital of the most genuine Spanish art, making neophytes, experts and curious people congregate in the Old Public Market to see, hear and feel the best flamenco art at the International Festival of Cante de las Minas.

It is in this temple, known as ‘The Cathedral of Cante’, where the sounds of Paco de Lucia, Camaron and Enrique Morente are still remembered, and every August new voices, guitars, instruments and heel-tapping of the best artists in the world of flamenco are added, who try to win the prestigious awards that the Festival grants. Everyone knows that, to succeed, you must first win in La Union. Miguel Poveda, Vicente Amigo, Pitingo or Israel Galvan know this well.

This summer, from July 31 to August 10, you have a date in La Union at the dean of flamenco festivals in our country. An event that writes the cultural, social and political chronicle of Spain every summer and that is visited by prominent personalities from all walks of life. Because nobody wants to miss what happens in this mining town, the comical musical event recognized as Marca Espana and declared of International Tourist Interest. Let yourself be seduced by its gastronomic encounters, its cultural agenda, the beauty of its surroundings or its posters, the work of the best contemporary artists in the world. The enchantment of its ‘madrugas’ invites, at the end of the main show of the night, to experience the most unique flamenco singing and dancing in a reduced format. That is where the duende is felt. To fall in love with all this, just come to La Unión during the Cante de las Minas International Festival.
See you in La Unión!

Joaquín Zapata Garcia
President of the Cante de las Minas Foundation. Mayor of La Unión.
