The Ciutat Flamenco Festival is an annual cultural event in Barcelona that celebrates flamenco, a traditional Spanish art form that combines music, dance, and singing. Now in its 31st edition, the festival is a prominent showcase for both well-known and emerging flamenco artists. It features a wide array of performances and activities, including concerts, dance shows and workshops, all aimed at highlighting the richness and diversity of flamenco.

The event will open with David Leiva on October 17, who will present “12 Flores”. A unique artistic experience, interweaving music and literature in an innovative way. This show, linked to the novel of the same name written by Leiva, will combine flamenco, jazz, copla and electronic music, guiding the listener on a sound journey that gradually reveals the mystery of the 12 crystal flowers.

On Friday, October 18 at 7 p.m. the 2nd edition of the Miguel Borrull International Guitar Competition will take place. The competition was born as a tribute to one of the main architects of the evolution of flamenco guitar and to one of the most important dynasties that the city of Barcelona has hosted.

On October 19, we will be able to enjoy “A walk through singing” by Lucía Beltrán, a singer who will invite us to discover a world where the synod (an ecclesiastical governing or advisory council) becomes a feeling and the feeling becomes emotion.

That first week of Ciutat Flamenco will close with “Muerdelimones” by the Cía. José Manuel Álvarez, on Sunday, October 20. This is a show starring José Manuel Álvarez in dance; Esperanza Fernández as guest singer; Josep Tutusaus on trombone, electronics and sound space; and Lucas Balbo on percussion and drums.

In its second and final week of Ciutat Flamenco 2024, performances will begin on Monday, October 21 with “Piano flamenco del siglo XXI” by Andrés Barrio (above left), an avant-garde pianist who fuses contemporary music with the deep roots of flamenco. In this show, the young pianist from Utrera will explore different flamenco styles such as soleá, seguiriya and bulerías, enriched with influences from various world music to offer us a modern and current vision of flamenco.

The next day, we continue talking about young flamenco, this time through the singing of El Mati (above right) who will give us the opportunity to live an intimate experience of flamenco singing accompanied by the guitar of Óscar Lago, on Tuesday, October 22.

Halfway through the week, on Wednesday 23rd October, guitarist Abraham Lojo will present his new EP “Calle Cruces”, a proposal based on flamenco, fused with genres such as jazz and classical music.

And from Lojo’s guitar to Mercedes Luján‘s on 24th October, who will premiere in Barcelona “Flamencas”, her new show in which she will present live the songs that will be part of her first album, “El don de la palabra”, accompanied by the second guitar and singing of Teresa Hernández and the percussion of Nasrine Ramani.

Heading into the closing weekend, on Friday 25 October, the VI International Congress of Flamencology and Flamenco Pedagogy will begin at 10:30 am at Casa Seat, musicians, researchers and teachers will meet to reflect on the genre from multiple perspectives to explore flamenco art in all its dimensions: artistic, research and pedagogical.

And to close this day, at 8 pm José Maldonado, Karen Lugo and Chicuelo will arrive with “Tres piezas”, a music and dance project that uses flamenco to explore the fundamental aspects of the human being: body, mind and spirit.

On Saturday 26 October, the day before the closing ceremony, dance will take centre stage thanks to the Flamenco Company of Inés Rubio. Her proposal for Ciutat Flamenco is “Florecer”, an intimate and profound journey through flamenco, which is born from her deepest need to express herself and dance freely. She will be accompanied by the guitar of Antonio Santiago “Ñoño”, the cajón of Paco de Mode, and the singing of Miguel de la Tolea and Luis de la Fefa.

On Sunday 27 October, the 31st edition of the Ciutat Flamenco Festival will come to an end with “Suite Flamenca” by Jorge Pardo and Bandolero Trío as featured artists. This concert will be divided into two parts: the first with the trio and Jorge Pardo, who will be joined by the orchestra in the second part.

The festival takes place at various venues across Barcelona, making it a significant event in the city’s cultural landscape. It not only honors the traditional aspects of flamenco but also explores modern interpretations, reflecting the evolving nature of this art form.

The event is organized by Taller de Músics, a key institution in Barcelona’s music scene, and is an important occasion for flamenco enthusiasts and anyone interested in Spanish culture.
