The exhibition “Flamenco in the dramatic black moon. Flamenco discography through the collections of the Carlos Martín Ballester Collection” is a journey through flamenco music recorded for the phonograph and gramophone, a fertile period in which many of the foundations of the genre were established.
From among the thousands of documents and works, more than a hundred have been selected, which will allow us to better understand the legacy of such leading figures as Antonia Mercé “La Argentina”, Manuel Vallejo, Ramón Montoya, Vicente Escudero, Antonio Mairena, etc.
The Carlos Martín Ballester Collection is the largest musical archive in Spain from the period 1890-1960, in which the quality and historical and phonographic importance of the flamenco section stands out, as well as that of Spanish recordings with political, cultural and scientific content. The musical archive is complemented by the documentary – which preserves manuscripts, concert programs, catalogues, contracts or posters – and the photographic collection.
