Flamenco Dancer and Painter ‘La Chunga’ Passes at 87

With great sadness we announce the passing of an icon of Flamenco dance, ‘La Chunga’ the artistic name of Micaela Flores Amaya born in Marsella (France) in 1938. Her expressive style of performing barefoot won the hearts of many. She became the friend and muse of Picasso, Rafael Alberti, Miró and Salvador Dalí and more.

Known as the ‘barefoot gypsy’ and cousin of Carmen Amaya, La Chunga forged her own path in the Flamenco world with her signature style of dance. Later, in her career, surrounded by so many painters, she discovered her own unique artistic side and began to create work that has been described as ingenuous.

Amidst huge international activity, she came into contact with the actress Ava Gardner, who was living in Madrid at the time. Under her influence, she was able to film in Hollywood, and debut in Las Vegas. But she also made her premiered in Spain, with directors such as José María Forqué and José Luis Gonzalvo, who later became her husband and father of her three children.

From Madrid to Paris, Maxim’s to El Corral de la Morería, New York and Hollywood, poems and paintings, the dancer, the goddess called La Chunga was a gypsy, pure gypsy (puro gitana), spontaneous and fresh. Her bare feet conquered the world.

Vida Flamenca wishes to extend our deepest condolences to the Amaya family.
