Israel Fernández & Diego del Morao zijn het nieuwe flamencodroomkoppel anno 2023. Ze vullen elkaar aan als ying en yang: de rauwe, fluisterende stem van Fernández wordt swingend ondersteund door de duivelse ritmiek van de hand van Del Morao. Als zoon en opvolger van de legendarische Moraíto Chico, zet hij de gitaartraditie van de zigeunerdynastie der Morao’s voort met fenomenale brille.

Op de openingsavond van de IX Flamenco Biënnale laten ze de traditie fonkelen met zinnenstrelende zang, frisse vertolkingen van het de oude cante jondo en de ‘soniquete’, de zigeunerswing uit Jerez de la Frontera, een van de flamenco-kweekvijvers. Met niemand minder dan de ‘Tina Turner’ van de flamenco: Tía Juana la del Pipa (1948), een ruwe flamencodiamant. Haar rauwe kreet, dans en opzwepende ‘jaleos’ (toejuichingen) maken van de avond een heuse ‘Fiesta Gitana’: een zigeunerfeest in de oorspronkelijke zin van het woord. Israel Fernández & Diego del Morao are the new flamenco dream couple of 2023. They complement one another like yin and yang: the raw, whispering voice of Fernández is underpinned by Del Morao’s devilish, swinging rhythm. As the son of and successor to the legendary Moraíto Chico, he carries on the guitar tradition of the flamenco dynasty with phenomenal brio.

On the opening evening of the IX Flamenco Biennale, they will be making the tradition sparkle with sensuous singing, fresh performances of the old cante jondo and the ‘soniquete’, the gitano swing from Jerez de la Frontera, one of the flamenco breeding grounds. With none other than the ‘Tina Turner’ of flamenco: Tía Juana la del Pipa (1948), a rough flamenco diamond. Her raw cries, vocals, dance and stirring ‘jaleos’ (shouts of encouragement) make the evening into a veritable ‘Fiesta Gitana’: a ‘gitano’ celebration in the original sense of the word. A festive inauguration into flamenco savoir-vivre.
