On one occasion Manolo SanlĂșcar indicated that the artist should be half root – rooted in tradition, bearer of the wisdom of our elders – and half dove – capable of dreaming, flying to open new paths and new ways in which to express art.

Thus, Manolo SanlĂșcar, consequently, links a tradition, prestigious for its seriousness and dedication, with a capacity for experimentation and delving into the universe of the guitar.

His coherence, equally intense on a personal level, and his dense work of creation and research is what somehow leads the public to acquire certainty and guarantee about the seriousness of any project, work or creation that the artist presents. This professional career is the main reason why Manolo SanlĂșcar is recognized today as an eminent authority in the culture of Flamenco.

The extensive professional career of Manolo SanlĂșcar, dotted with awards, concerts in universal culture centers, honorary distinctions, applause from critics and the public, the opening of new expressive paths, his teaching career, is difficult to reduce to the narrow field of some pages that by their very nature have to be brief, and with brevity we give this sample of the artist.

BIO:

Manolo SanlĂșcar, Manuel Munoz Alcon. SanlĂșcar de Barrameda (Cadiz), 1943-2022. Guitarist. His first teacher was his father, Isidro Sanlucar, a baker and old style guitarist, who frequently came home with people who were fond of cante and playing; from his childhood he was exceptionally skilled to follow in his steps. His brothers also decided on the same vocation and, among them, Isidro. However, those who had the greatest influence on his beginnings, as he declared himself, were Nino Ricardo and Diego el del Gastor. The former due to his sensitivity, his fundamental contribution to the flamenco guitar, his playing that was so impregnated with feeling, and the latter for his really old air … While he learned, he worked at the bakery with his father, until he was fourteen, when he began to act professionally in the company of Pepe Marchena. He was not yet thirty when he was considered at the height of his career, due to the publication in 1972 of his recorded anthology Mundo y formas de la guitarra flamenca.

Manolo SanlĂșcar belongs to that small group or artists upon which nobody doubts when coming to acknowledge their talent. Gifted with an exceptional musicality and a technique out of the ordinary, each of his recitals becomes a superb lesson in guitar, expertise and art.

His astonishing technique, which never loses contact with improvisation and the direct spiritual communication with flamenco style, doesn’t make of virtuosity a goal in itself, but praises it to convey deep emotional qualities.

“Trebujena”, guitar and orchestra concert in RE MAJOR, opened a new door to flamenco in the path of classical music and set up a full composite revelation, starting from the flamenco roots.

His “Medea”, composed for the Spanish National Ballet, was performed all over the world gathering success.

“Tauromagia”, is a musical journey that the composer undertook through the world of bullfighting. Themes where guitars and voices (a choir of strings, metals and percussion) keep threshing, note by note, the history of the art of the fighting, from the birth of the bull in the meadow (‘Nacencia’) to the triumphal appearance of the bullfighter through the big door (‘Prince’s Gate’), follow harmoniously linked the moments of hope, fear, happiness, death and glory that come into the fiesta.

On May 20th, 1992, he premiered in Malaga his symphonic poem “Aljibe”, a flamenco symphony for guitar, symphonic orchestra, male and female voices and percussion. The concert was with the Orquesta Ciudad de Málaga, conducted by Enrique García Asensio.

Manolo was the Musical Director of the film “Sevillanas” by Carlos Saura.

Tauromagia (Polydor, 1988)

Descanza en paz maestro…
