IVÁN VARGAS, also known as “La savia nueva de El Sacromonte” (the new blood of the Sacromonte) was born in Granada in 1986 into one of the strongest family trees in the flamenco world – Los Maya– which includes such renowned artists as Mario Maya and Manolete.

Iván Vargas grew up dancing from its family business the cave “Cueva La Rocío”. At the tender age of 8 he premiered in Madrid at the hand of Cristóbal Reyes at the prestigious tablao “Zambra”. From that moment on, his career rapidly expanded, performing in renowned flamenco venues such as Casa Patas, Corral de la Morería, Café de Chinitas and with solo performances at the Bienal de Sevilla, and also abroad, in Italy and the USA. He danced alongside heavy weights of flamenco – Eva la Yerbabuena and Farruquito- and performed with maestro Enrique Morente and José Mercé. He collaborated with fashion designers Victorio y Lucchino, and starred in the documentary “Siete sentimientos flamencos” –written by Ortiz Nuevo-. He contributed also to the shows of the prestigious theatre group “Fura dels Baus”.

With such a remarkable track record, Iván Vargas (Heredia by maternal lineage, not to be forgotten) brings to Los Angeles his new show “Savia Nueva”. This performance reflects his particular vision and feel for flamenco, yet stays true to his roots of dancing with the sights, sounds, and scents of his hometown. He mixes the energy of his youth with the knowledge of the past through collaborations with choreographers Juan Andrés Maya and Manolete. Furthermore, performances include martinetes, farrucas and alegrias; we are referring to the exceptional singing of José Cortés and Oscar Valero, phenomonal guitarist Andrés Vadin and the frenetic percussion of Samuel Flores.

SAVIA NUEVA is a show that combines past, present and future on the same stage. Vida Flamenca welcomes Ivan Vargas for this debut performance here in Los Angeles.

“Savia Nueva”
