A cultural event that would serve as a creative engine and showcase the different aesthetics that coexist within flamenco. A cultured and universal art form. With that in mind, and with the aim of reviving the name and work of Navarrese native Agustín Castellón Campos “Sabicas,” Flamenco On Fire was born in 2014, an event that has become a well-established summer event in the north of the country. Every year, established artists and emerging figures perform in Navarre to celebrate the vitality of this ever-evolving genre.

GRANDES CONCIERTOS

The “Grandes Conciertos” series brings the world’s top flamenco artists, both established and emerging, to audiences each year, as well as Flamenco on Fire’s own productions. This year’s 12th edition will kick off on August 22nd in Viana, with Jerez-born José Valencia performing at the Ruinas de San Pedro (9:00 PM). On Saturday, August 23rd, Triana singer Esperanza Fernández will perform at the Teatro Gaztambide in Tudela (9:30 PM). The series travels to Pamplona/Iruña and returns to the Baluarte Auditorium with four performances. Alzapúa III, an in-house production, will be performed on August 27th (8:30 PM) with the guitars of Manolo Franco, Gerardo Núñez, Rafael Riqueni, and José Antonio Rodríguez. A unique gathering, which this year will feature guest artists Antonio Canales and Montse Cortés on vocals, with the special collaboration of Pepe Habichuela. The ballet of the Antonio Najarro Company will take place on August 28 (9:30 p.m.). A new Flamenco on Fire production, “Reseteando,” will take place on August 30 (9:30 p.m.) and will feature singers Lela Soto, Ángeles Toledano, and María Terremoto. Closing this cycle in style will be Tomatito, the essential guitarist, who will present his show “Un Camino,” a journey through his discography and will take the opportunity to preview some of his new works that will be included on his upcoming album. The event will take place on August 31 (8:30 p.m.).

21ST CENTURY STAGE

Contemporary and always cutting-edge, ‘Escenario Siglo XXI’ is expanding to other venues in the Navarrese capital (Pamplona) through the addition of the Gayarre Theater and Baluarte, in addition to the regular Zentral hall in Pamplona/Iruña. Alicante-born Yerai Cortés will kick things off with his show “Coral Guitar” at the Gayarre Theater on August 26 (8:00 PM). Queralt Lahoz will present her new album “9:30 PM” on August 28 (8:00 PM) at the Zentral Hall. On August 29 at Baluarte (9:30 PM), it will be the turn of Granada-based Los Planetas, who will present “A History of Planet Flamenco” in their “Essential Concert” format. Rocío Márquez and Bronquio will close this stage with their hit “Tercer Cielo” in a hall format. It will be on August 31st (8:00 p.m.) in the Zentral Hall, putting a finishing touch to this cycle.

NIGHTTIME SERIES

This series’ common denominator is its nocturnality and is always held in emblematic locations or spaces designed to showcase the personalities of the featured artists. On August 26th, it will be the turn of the Balcony of the Government Palace of Navarre in Pamplona/Iruña. The singer Miguel Vargas from Extremadura will kick off this year’s street programming in the Navarrese capital at 10:00 PM; admission is free. The renowned Hotel 3 Reyes transforms into a flamenco tablao each year. There will be five nights: Duquende‘s singing at 10:30 PM on August 27th, and Alba Heredia‘s dancing from Granada at 11:30 PM on August 28th. On the third night, Friday, August 29th, the singing of Jerez native Tomasa Guerrero “La Macanita” will once again take center stage, starting at 11:30 p.m. Meanwhile, on Saturday, August 30th, at 11:30 p.m., the dancing of Granada native Vero “La India” will once again take center stage. On Sunday, August 31st, the singing, dancing, and guitar of Campo de Gibraltar will close out the series, a celebration in memory of Canela de San Roque, beginning at 10:30 p.m. and featuring members of the renowned singer’s family: José Canela and Fernando Canela on vocals, Noelia Sabarea on dance, and Nono Reyes on guitar. The festival will close out the series and the twelfth edition of Flamenco on Fire.

FLAMENCO ON FIRE FOUNDATION AWARD

The Flamenco On Fire Foundation celebrates the third edition of these awards that recognize talents and long-standing careers. Individuals and organizations, moreover, that make art possible, but whose expression is not purely musical or theatrical. On this occasion, Carlos Martín Bellester, a specialist in sound heritage and the digitization and restoration of 78 rpm records and phonograph cylinders, is also director of the prestigious Carlos Martín Ballester Collection; Cristina Cruces Roldán, Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Seville, a renowned researcher and teacher specializing in flamenco; and the Alalá Foundation, dedicated to social integration through the education of children and young people at risk of exclusion, using flamenco as one of its motivational tools to achieve its goals.

This award was created with the intention of recognizing those who for decades have worked to disseminate and honor this culture. Beyond the strictly musical aspect, it has also been achieved through dissemination, research, training, and production. Thus, in 2022, the organizers recognized José María Velázquez-Gaztelu, Pepe Lamarca, and the tablao Corral de la Morería. Last year, the award went to El Flamenco Vive, the Amor de Dios dance academy, and researcher Norberto Torres.

The awards ceremony, presented by journalist Juan Garrido, will conclude with a grand finale: a recital by Jerónimo Maya. A flamenco guitarist who was already a child prodigy at the age of five. His guitar exudes personality and character, which is why, in addition to performing solos, he has accompanied the singing of most of the leading figures in contemporary flamenco.
